Anybody need old colonial style windows?
I'm replacing 5 of my old colonial style windows in 2 weeks with vinyl double hungs. I was wondering if the old windows would be of any use to anyone who likes this style. They're obviously old with layers of paint and weakened wood frames. They open outward from the center and they are anchored to the frame with regular hinges. I guess they look like french doors for windows. There are 8 panes of glass for each "door", and there are 4 sets of these, meaning 8 "doors". Another set with 6 panes for each door. They lock like french doors too, at the top and bottom of each, closest to the center. Don't know if these have value, but they're gonna be trash otherwise. Can send pics if wanted.

Seems like a shame to throw them away. You might donate them to someplace like http://www.bignyc.org/

Checked out their site. Didn't know this existed! Unfortunately, they need more modern stuff. Only want dbl paned thermal windows.

what are the dimensions?

For the 4 sets, each of the "doors" are about 18x61.5. For the other set, each door is about 19.5x48.

Not to be overly presumptuous, but if I may: One of the biggest aesthetic mistakes people make in renovating is to remove multipane windows and replace them with blank, unmullioned windows--it's like taking a statue and poking the eyes out. It also sounds dangerous to replace casement windows (the swing-out kind) with double-hung--isn't this going to screw up the look of your house? Now I don't even know if your house is old, so I don't want to talk out of school--but are you sure you want to do this? Especially with vinyl windows? Cause they're often reallllly ugly (albeit much more energy efficient). Is it not possible for you to at least get windows that are aluminum outside with wood on the inside so you can paint/stain them? Or to replace with another casement window? I'm just trying to be helpful--many a nice old building has been ruined this way. Cheers.

I appreciate the advice, and completely agree that the older style windows look better. However, the windows I'm replacing are the only ones left of that style. The other 2/3 of the house has already been replaced by dbl hungs by the previous owner. So I'm actually trying to match those.
