wood floors over tile?
We are attempting a kitchen reno in a co-op apt. A couple of contractors have pointed out that our current tile is laid over other tile and there is a possibility that, while removing two layers of tile, we might crack the ceiling of our downstairs neighbors. We have not so great history with these neighbors and can't chance that, so we are thinking of either another layer of tile or, what we really want, hardwood just layered on top of what is there. Is this possible? What are the pitfalls?

I wouldn't do it. I'd get rid of the tile, but if you must, you're gonna put plywood down first, right?

To answer your question, I always remove all the layers of tile due to weight factors. If you remove the tile in a proper way you wont damage the ceiling below. Try to speak to the downstairs neighbors and see if they will let you take pictures of the ceiling to cover yourself after you do the construction. If they dont allow you, speak to the condo or coop board. Tile or wood floors allway start with a clean slate.

Wood over 2 layers of tile? How many inches off the floor is that? Will you ahve to step up into your kitchen?

If not doing an extensive kitchen reno, lay pergo or engineered over the tile, it won't be an issue. If doing the entire kitchen over and spending some significant money, break up the old tiles. If the below ceiling is damaged be prepared to repair, whats the BIG deal.
