renaming parts of bed stuy
i've seen and heard many discussions lately about this. how does one go about waging a campaign to rename an area into "micronabes". (nolita, bococa, dumbo, etc) it seems like bed stuy is the last area in nyc to have experienced this, which makes no sense as it is the largest part of the city. people are constantly making sweeping generalizations about the area as a whole- it seems that a geographical naming breakdown is overdue. any ideas on names? who do we cc on this?
Comments
yes, it's long overdue.
"westbed"-classon to nostrand/lafayette to fulton

There already is Stuyvesant Heights, which is the landmarked district.

This is hardly new. When I attended meetings of the old Brooklyn Brownstone Conference in the '70s, to represent PLG, Ruby Ford, who represented BS always insisted that there was NO such thing--she was representing the neighborhoods [PLURAL] of Bedford AND Stuyvesant Heights.

...very interesting. so then...how does one go about changing/creating new names in existing neighborhoods? who do you make an appeal to?

HOW ABOUT " DO OR DIE "

yeah, that's original. it's not the 80's anymore, you crackhead. go back to park slope.

ha! this just further illustrates the need for renaming. some people are just so utterly clueless. anyway, some names-
Westuy -fulton to lafayette, classon to nostrand
midbed-area between westuy and stuy heights

"how does one go about changing/creating new names in existing neighborhoods? who do you make an appeal to?"
You don't make an appeal to anyone.Neighborhood names have nolegal status. You just make up a name and see if it catches on.
Some examples I can think of are two in my own neighborhood: Lefferts Manor, coined in 1919 and Prospect Lefferts Gardens, in 1968. Elsewhere in brownstone Brooklyn there are similar stories. The Boerum Hill name was made up in the late '60s. Ft. Greene and Clinton Hill were both collectively called simply "the Hill" in the 19th Century.
If a new name catches on, the neighborhood name is changed--if it doesn't, it's not..

Call it whatever you want in hopes of raising your property value.
I'm sure you people have a better name for "gentrification" as well.
Late-breaking news "Westbedders"... your neighbors despise
you. Keep pretending you don't know that.

SoStuy (South of Putnam between Bedford and Patchen - this is the "rebranded" Stuyvesant Heights)
The Villages of Bedford and Stuyvesant (let's go old school)
East Ft. Greene (hey it worked for the East Village, AKA Ave. A, B, C, D)
North Weeksville (redefine historic borders!)
BeSt (this is just too hideous)

6:58-it's sad that you are so angry. those comments are simply untrue. i have lived in "westbed" for many, many years and think it's a great idea to have some individuality within the neighborhoods in bed stuy. it's not about property values, it's about understanding geography and defining it. by the way, my neighbors are the finest i've had anywhere in the city-i've lived in fort greene, park slope and the west village.
***The Villages of Bedford and Stuyvesant (let's go old school)
i like it!!

Hello from the Victorian village of "Eastern Bed-Stuy" (bounded by Fulton, Broadway and Stuyvesant Ave). I'm hoping that in time we can establish another Landmark District over here as there are a number of excellent solid brownstone house blocks, with few apartment buildings and 'Fedders' houses (may I roast alive before I own a Fedders AC). But they are creeping in. Bed-Stuy needs a well organized preservation group. I dream of a campaign to convince people that putting paint onto houses that are made of stone is silly.
