Going to the Building Department

We are doing a small renovation in our brownstone apartment that requires filing with the DoB. My architect doesn't do expediting, though she will fill out all the paperwork and stamp the drawings and forms.

Has anyone done filing themselves? I've heard horror stories about the Building Department and the chances of any neophyte, like myself, going in and coming out with the correct information in one day is pretty slim. Does anyone have any pointers? The project is so small, I really can't justify paying an additional consultant to do the filing, but I can justify taking a sick day or two to go to the Building Department.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Actually your chance of coming out in one day is zero. You can do it though, but be prepared to spend a l o n g time there.

I can't say enough good things about DOB's website. it's got ton of info and forms that you can fill out ahead of time. take the time to go through it first and plan accordingly.

it depends on the amout of work, you may or may not need to file for a permit. most importantly, you need to understand what DOB requires.

The DOB can be very time consuming for those home owners that have other important things to take care of. And ofcourse the DOB can be confusing if you dont know where to go and or who to talk to. Lastly, if you know a great deal of people that work in the right section (as with anything in this world) tings move a lot swifter!

Give me a call and we can discuss what your trying to do and try to assist you.
