Plumbers grade fixtures versus Lowes/Home Depot

I was told by my plumbing contractor that the standard quailty of the fixtures he is proposing to use in my house are not the same as they sell at Lowe's or Home Depot. He said they mass produce those and they might look the same on the outside but the guts are not up to the quality he offers. I think he's full of it. Those discount places just buy more in quantity which they than can offer that stuff at lower prices. What's the truth?

probably something in between. there are some fixtures that say, Kohler, will make exclusively for Home Depot. and i wouldn't be surprised if they were mass produced cheaply. but if you went to Lowe's and opened the Kohler book and special ordered what you wanted, i'm sure it would be the same stuff your contractor gets.

he is right - same with the hardware like schllage knobs etc....the quality is off but they are priced accordingly.

NY Times did an article on this a couple of months ago in Home section. Should still be up there.

From what I remember, some (not all) of the cheaper stuff was constructed better than expected. Article had specifics. . . . and came out after I bought my expensive stuff!

The product at Home Depot and Lowe's is the exact same manufactured quality that plumbers and contractors purchase at wholesale. I know, I work for the largest plumbing fixture company in the US.
