Running New Electric
Our contractor just started running the new lines for the electric. They are trying to save the ceiling height so they are boring holes through the support beams (floor of the top apartment ceiling on the one beneath) and running the cable through the holes. Does this sound standard or should I be worried?

If it's done right a few holes will not change anything. Larger holes done by plumbers are much more of a concern.

Small holes are fine -- not too many, please. Larger work by plumbers should not be allowed.

this situation is specifically referenced in NYC code. Not that I can find the specific language at this very moment but in my mind, it's something like no bigger than 7/8" diameter in any 4" run of 2"x8" joist. Regardless of my accuracy, if you're that worried, you might want to consult with a structural. As the other reply states, small holes aren't usually an issue but many of them in one concentrated area (say, for example if you're feeding an entire floor and passing through one joist) could be.
