Cambridge Place
A half-joking (though we should be crying) scolding to you Grand Avers who have relocated the drug-dealing and hanging out to Cambridge Place, making life there as insufferable as it had been on Grand. Hopefully, the residents of Cambridge will be able to displace them again to someone else's block.

Call the cops, night and day, and Tish James. Make a stink again just like last Spring when there was that meeting with Tish, Hynes, the 88th and the rest.
Plus, for all you landlords out there, raise your rents if you can on anyone you think is dealing or harboring dealers (to the extent you can). Push them out.

My children's daycare is on Cambridge Pl bet. Gates & Greene Avenues. This is a beautiful and friendly block.

i assume the OP meant down near fulton, but i never noticed much suspicious activity. are you sure you aren't just seeing people hanging out in line for the post office? :D

Crime Prevention through Environmental Design efforts might help. They are used more out west and in the south. The emphasis is on changing environmental factors instead of just relying on the police, locks and bars, etc.
Better lighting, improved sight lines and landscaping and other efforts can reduce crime. I wonder if NYPD could provide soem advise to residents.

yes, i meant towards fulton, but certainly not the line at the post office, thanks. referring more to the behavior that led to a cars jumping curbs, chases and number of arrests on the street one night last week (i doubt they were waiting to buy stamps) and the type of activity that involves cars and people coming and going throughout the ENTIRE night and the noise and commotion that goes along with it. you are right in that this kind of activity is fairly new, or certainly stepped up, since the crackdown on grand ave. i think most people would fear the possible retribution of calling the cops on their fellow building inhabitants, but clearly the board is not too concerned about this new problem for some reason or other...

Start a phone chain. Get as many neighbors to agree to call the cops when one of you notices unsavory activity.
when you do then call the next person on the chain and describe what you are seeing and then get the description down pat. Then the first person should call 911 and report the incident. Then just keep going.
Keep a log (informally) that you take to the precinct meeting and when they try to softshoe around the fact that they have been placing police in the area then let them know the dates and the calls placed and what was the resolution from those calls.
99% of the time the pd will say they arrested or cited the loiterers/dealers/gang bangers. If they say they arrested them then ask (THIS IS IMPORTANT): HOW MANY ARRESTS LED TO CONVICTIONS.
The police know that by saying arrest that calm public nerves. However many criminals, can make bail or just get hassled by the cops and released. Conviction means they were found guilty and placed in jail.
Also, call the Nation of Islam. There used to be a presence on Fulton and they are lovely and very community minded. They have been known to clean a place up just by getting through to the people who are on the other side of the law.
Talk to local churches and bring this to their attention. They too may call the police to get their asses moving.
See if there is a local CDB (community development board) get them involved too.
We care. Good luck.
