HEPA vacuum - buy or rent?
We are doing work on our brownstone and concerned about dust and in particular lead dust lingering. Were thinking to rent a HEPA vacuum but not sure where we do so- any places people know to rent one?
Also, noticed Miele, Hoover and others sell what look like regular cannister vacuums claiming to be "HEPA" rated. Is this really the same as a rented HEPA vac and have people gone this route?

You can buy a decent HEPA vacuum for $200; I can't imagine living without one (I bought a Eureka that Consumer Reports recommended a few years ago). While a household vac can't pick up as much as a shop vac (and HEPA shop vacs are most expensive), I use mine all the time for cleaning up lead paint dust (am currently stripping our woodwork).

I just went through the same thing - I ended up buying a $40 shop vac and a $250 HEPA vac (Kenmore, recommended by Consumer Reports), and I am very happy. Last week I scraped a bunch of paint off of my new (old) porch and just sucked it up - no problem!

I bought the super quiet and super effective Fein model # 9-55-13 HEPA Turbo II. At the risk of sounding like a tool geek (or worse a shill), as a former cabinet maker and a current home renovator, it's the best tool I've used. It's quieter than my home vac and more powerful than any other shop vac I've owned.

Well, we bit the bullet this eve and quickly went to Best Buy to get ourselves an Electrolux (Oxygen H3 or something like that) that claims to be a HEPA vac. Let's see how it works!
Thanks for all the feedback.
