prefinished or site finished
I'm having trouble deciding between prefinished & site finished wood floor for my kitchen. One contractor says he will never install prefinished again, the other strongly prefers it. I've only seen one prefinished floor installed and it looked pretty weird -- shiny & fake. Do they all look that way?

I'd say stay away from prefinished. It looks like plastic, fake looking. Get nice wood, red oak is warm and finish it on site. It is easier for the contractors, the prefinished, but in my opinion it is not so nice.

Yep, I would stay away from prefinished, it looks like plastic. I installed one recently ( as a job ) I didn't like it. Real red oak looks great and will always look great. Yeah, I know, more expense & time to finish raw flooring, and the smell. However, remember, once you put it down you're going to live with it for a long long time.

The wood I wanted came prefinished, but I had it sanded off (my contractor thought I was a little nutty). Prefinished is certainly more durable than an in-the-field application, but durability isn't everything.
