Laying Tile

Hi,

We recently hired a guy to do our tile and came home mortified at the job he did. Long story short, we need to fix it and going back to the original floor is not an option. (We'd have to go down to the joists and that's just not happening.) Does anyone have any tips for laying tile over tile. (We know, we know, not ideal.) Right now just the tile and the mortar are down, without grout.

Thanks.

Thanks.

You don't supply enough info to accurately answer your question. Is the tile badly spaced, uneven in height, wrong thinset, what type of tile, underlayment, new floor height issues etc.

Anyway, best tile help (imho) on the web can be found here : http://johnbridge.com/vbulletin/index.php

Well, since you don't want to remove any layers your only choice is to add one. If it's flat you can add tile over the old with thinset. So what did your tile guy do that made was so bad?

You should be able to take up the badly done new tile without going back to the old floor. Why isn't this an option?

you can tile over tile, no problem. unless there are so many layers already that it would cause heoght problems with your mouldings and doors.

I think you can just break up the old tile, scrape it off and start over. You should have cement under it, or wonderboard (cement sheetrock). Assuming this is intact, just start over. How did he screw it up? Laid them crookedly? It?s messy and disappointing but isn?t impossible to fix without ripping up the subfloor.
