replacing window with door

Hello. We're looking to put a door with glass panel and transom where there is now a window and the wall between it and the floor . Any suggestions on 1) door installers you have used and are happy with, and 2) how much installation should cost (assuming we pay about 1000 for door).

We will have to take out the wall below the window and would like to find reliable and good people that won't cost a fortune. I saw an earlier post on this subject but they were going with a higher end door (Marvin or Pella) the company would install with transom for around 5000. That's a bit out of our range.

Thanks in advance, Brownstoners.

5000 sounds in the right range. We paid 3200 for just replacing window with a door (Elegant Doors,2600) and building steps in/out to get to the original sill. In reprospect, we should've put in the door right, with a transom above.

5000 sounds about right to me too. You are paying for the labor, it has nothing to do with the cost of the door. Definitely get the transom

Hello.

I am nathan from southslope woodworks and I make custom brownstone doors. I can tell you that the price for the installation of a door will variy greatly based on the existing conditions of the window. For example: if the window casing is original, would you hang a door with a jamb inside of it (standard size)or fabricate a new jamb the same size (custom) as the existing one and join them together. The latter of the two is more involved but the result is cleaner and a larger opening.

Also the cost of a door will vary based on the species of wood, finish, glass, and hardware. 5000 is a good price for a good quality job. I love to share my knowledge of doors so if you have any more questions call my shop. 718.832.1058
