The Shadows from Ratner's Atlantic Yards
On my block association website www.southoxford.com I posted a recolored drawing from their Environmental Study of the shadow sweep of Bruce Ratner’s proposed Atlantic Yards Development. Other drawings from the DEIS are also featured. Many local parks, historic structures and districts will be in shadow, as well as parts of historic Fort Greene Park. If the development goes through as planned, some areas near the yards will never get any sun again.

The bad news is that Ratner's development will happen if market forces determine it will be profitable, even if all the residents of Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, and Prospect Heights lay down in front of the steamrollers.
The good news is, the market is, indeed, finally slowing. There is a glut of units in the City. The golden hour has passed. The Ratner project may never happen, and, if it does, it will probably be significantly reduced in scale. So, take heart.

The Ratner project is a nightmare for Brooklyn. It is a visionless hulking development that will do nothing for downtown; except provide incredible traffic jams and smog. I hope the market continues to correct itself making these types of bloated developments unprofitable.
