Letter from DOB
Grrrr, I just got a letter from the DOB saying that they've got a Stop Work Order on my building. This isn't news to me. It's from the previous owner.
Now the letter is just saying that they're going to flag the property on the BIS website, which I believe it's already on there. So maybe this is just a letter that doesn't mean anything right? They're claiming that this is "an improvement to their department's ongoing committment to increasing transparency."
I'm not doing any work on my building, nor am I planning to in the near future.
So is this something I can ignore for now?
Is there a way to get them to lift the active Stop Work Order since it was from so long ago (4-5 years) and with a previous owner.
I think the SWO was for work done without a permit. I don't actually know what the work was as there are no records. The building inspector didn't see anything out of the ordinary when it was inspected for our purchase.
Advice would be welcome.

I just received a similar letter concerning work done 4 years ago. I'm currently renovating and have a current work permit where everything is in order. It seems the DOB have no clue.

I think it was automated. I got one too, have a current DOB permit for some work I'm doing. The letter I got relates to a resolved complaint from two owners ago. The DOB person told me not to worry about it. I'm going to have my expediter make sure it is cleared up.

i'm the original poster - i guess this means the DOB will have their hands full answering this same question over and over again huh?
is there a point when this becomes a big problem?
i think the previous owner paid the fine but somehow did not get the SWO removed. so i can't tell if this is a resolved complaint or not.

I got one also -- for a stop work order on my next door neighbor's property. Nice try, DOB.

And to make matters even more interesting, my next door neighbor's SWO was already resolved.

Yup, I got one this past week as well. We made an appt with an inspector to come over and tell us what the heck its about because all of our earlier permits(from at least 2 years ago) were signed off by the DOB.

Any S.W.O (stop Work Order) is an issue! It can prevent you from doing many things and at times if the DOB has found that you are still working against this stop work order, you will be fined and they have a "police team" that will tape off your property and wont allow you to come near it unless you get everything rescinded.
Then the Evironmental Control Board comes in with their fines (even though its the same company so to speak) and thats more money out of your pocket.
As an expediter myself who handles these types of situations, I would advise you to get that taken care of. If you would like, I can look into it and help get you on your way violation free.
