Finding a sublet during renovation
My wife and I are about to undertake major renovations on our townhouse in Carroll Gardens, which means we will have to find somewhere else to live for the next 4 months. We've checked Craigslist and the NY Times and don't see anything worth considering. Does anyone have any other ideas of where we might look? Many thanks for any and all help.

You might want to sign a year's lease somewhere, and then break the lease - this way, you have flexibility if reno goes over 4 months. Usually, you just lose a month's rent.

I may have just the apt for you. Email me directly so we can discuss the specifics. Its a 3br duplex with pvt garden in Park Slope that I am seeking short term residents for. I had not yet posted it to CL or with any area brokers who might know of couples undergoing a renovation and seeking temporary quarters.

you are a smart, and considerate husband! thank you for not making your wife live through a renovation. it's a terrible thing to go through, and should be avoided at all costs. tell your wife she's a lucky gal!

You would lose more than a month's rent if you sign a lease for a year, break it, and it takes more than a month to fill the aparment.
Did you try posting on CL? Some people might be looking for a person who wants a month-to-month lease.

I think it is best to get into a situation where you can be open about your situation. Craig's list is good, but also sublet.com. They list apartments which can be rented month to month or for short periods. Also, this time of year is good for short sublets because people vacation. I sublet a place during my renovation month to month and it worked out fine. Good for you, living away from the renovation and good luck.
