Ducklings Hatched in my BYard in PH

We discovered yesterday that nine ducklings were hatched in our backyard. They are gorgeous and we are very concerned about them as their mom seems to have gone AWOL. We have been feeding them and watering them according to standards we found online, but we are concerned about what to do next. The Bronx Zoo, PP Zoo, and Animal Control have not been helpful at all, the latter claiming it's not an emergency. Does anyone know a way we could relocate them safely to a nearby pond? Does anyone have a kiddie pool we could borrow? All tips and suggestions are welcome -- rfsgreene AT mac dot com! Thanks! And I will send pix to brownstoner so you all can enjoy this happening!

Personally I dislike animals.

Is this an animal blog?

your local chinese restuarant could probably use them...

Try the freecycle board on yahoo groups - www.freecycle.org - someone may have humane ideas as to what to do.

Thank you for being responsible about these animals.
(Frankly, "anonymous", I dislike people who are cruel to animals.)

You need to get the ducklings to a wildlife rehabilitator, here is a website with a list of local sources:

Good luck with the ducklings!

The mother may not have been AWOL, just off foraging. Interfering with the nest could end up scaring the mom away. I grew up in a rural area, and the duck and geese were not on their nests 24x7. We just left the nest alone and the momma duck would tend to the ducklings.

To poster July 16, 2006 08:14 PM,
Have you ever considered that you are an animal?

So....the trolls can still post on the forum? We should have to register to post here too, no? Anyway, a million years ago, there was a "bird lady" who volunteered or worked at the Humane Society on 59th St. It's worth a shot...she might still be there or if not, perhaps they can be helpful in the matter.

PS...Rural person is right. Please don't take it upon yourself to move them!

I was one of the anon's and am not the troll.. why do these ducklings elicit more sympathy than our local rats? they look cuter, I guess. Are you all vegans? If not, you are being hypocryts.

I am a troll for disliking animals?

Sorry to be politically incorrect.

I thought this blog was about real estate.

Who cares about ducks?

Wow what cute ducks. Is that better.

I think live ducks are disgusting.

Eating ducks is common and the post about bringing ducks to a chinese restaurant is logical.

No one complains when harmless roaches are targeted for extermination on this board. But mention eating some ducks and you are labeled a troll.

try the raptor trust...it's in nj. they rehabilitate all types of birds and if they are well enough, release them into the wild. i've brougt birds there and they were very helpful. it's about 30 min from nyc.

Ducklings rock!! Hancock1 is right; find a wildlife rehabilitator. I know that Robert Zink, listed in the link Hancock1 provides, has a great reputation in this respect. (I'm sure the others are just as competent but I don't personally know of them.) Zoos and animal control don't consider wild animals under their aegis, while a wildlife rehabilitator specializes in these types of cases. I know, as I rescued an injured bird at a Yankees/Sox game in Yankee stadium (named him "Jeter")and couldn't find anyone to take him until someone recommended a rehabilitator. She took him in, fixed him up, and set him free. Go Jeter. Go Yanks.

Thanks for all the helpful feedback. Am happy to report that all nine ducklings flourished here in PH, feasting on oatmeal and greens. They swam in the largest shallow dishes we had, chiefly lasagna pans, and roamed the garden snacking on our herbs. We had an amazing rehabilitator come and get them this morning -- Sean Casey -- http://www.scarnyc.org/
Bless him!
Will send the pix in to brownstoner shortly.
