Type of trade?
I am interested in having a spigot installed in my Brooklyn backyard. What type of trade handles this type of work? Does it have to be a plumber or can a regular handyman take it on? Thanks

I would suggest having a plumber put it in. I in fact am a handyman, and generally shy away from plumbing and electric. The hookup to the interior plumbing, going through the wall and the correct plumbing to prevent freezing in the winter months can be tricky. As a handyman, I would say a plumber is the way to go.

Yes, we had this done in both our front and back yards a year ago and used our original contractor. You definitely need a special kind of turn off valve to prevent freezing, so make sure it's done by someone who knows what they are doing. PS -- it's great to have it after 2 years of running a very long hose from the basement hatch out into the yard!

we had our handyman do it. it was actually pretty easy. he ran a line from the basement bathroom to the outside wall, making sure to put a shutoff valve (accessible through a wall panel) in the middle, then, drill to the outside, caulk, seal, presto. as winter approachs, just drain the line, shut the water off. no worries. depending on the proximity of the source, it should be too difficult.

I had my plumber, gateway, do it. It cost about three hundred I think. No special valve or faucet, I just have to shut off the water in the winter. Well worth the money!

there IS a special faucet if you want it- not significantly more expensive and you won't have to shut off the water in the winter.
