Wood Molding. Urethane, Stain, or Oil?
I just bought a house that has a bunch of crown molding and wood doors that have just been lightly stained or raw and was wondering on what to do with them. I was wondering what people's opinion are between polyurethane, staining, oiling, or even painting.

Staining simply adds color; it doesn't preserve the wood. Oil saturates into the wood and hardens it, which helps preserve it. Poly stays on top and provides a glossy coast (or satin - matte - if you prefer). Much of the woodwork in our home was treated with poly and looks great. The problem with poly, though, is that it's largely irreversible, making it very difficult for me to match, fix, or change anything treated that way. Most people on old house forums recommend shellac or oil instead.
