Dealing with mosquitos in the garden

Anyone have suggestions on how to deal with mosquitos in the back yard...they were horrible last year, and really kept us from using the garden as much as we could..thanks!

Comments

We, too, had a horrible time last year with mosquitoes that were quite vicious. They were larger that the usual garden-variety mosquito with white banding around their abdomens, and I had never seen that type of mosquito before. I felt compelled to Google them and learned they are Asian Tiger mosquitoes that are quite aggressive and give bad bites. These mosquitoes also don't care whether it's daylight or dusk when other mosquitoes begin to stir -- they're on the prowl and attack any time of day or night. I tried Deep Woods Off and it didn't work; I tried citronella and it didn't work; I tried planting multitudes of marigolds and it didn't work -- so we were at a loss about what to do. I always made sure there was no standing water anywhere in my front or back yards and even kept my birdbaths dry. With the relatively mild winter we've had, I'm afraid the skeeter situation might be just as bad this coming season. Maybe somebody out there has some other suggestions that can help you and me!?!

my friend said her sister out in long island uses somekind of electric lattern/light that attracts and zap mosquitoes. sorry i can't remember exactly what it is but she said it is very effective. they were able to enjoy the backyard near the water without mosquitoes. i'll try to find out and post it here later. i also have the same problems.

Anyone have experience with these skeeter eaters/mosquito magnets?? They are a couple hundred bucks, but certainly would be worth it to get rid of these annoying creatures!

us too! i did some research on natural bug repellent spray- and there's a garlic based spray that you attach to your hose and shower the garden with... that i'm planning on trying. but i don't know if it's bad for some plants or if the garden reeks of garlic because of it-- anyone try this?

Posted by: lc at March 30, 2006 10:04 AM

Have used the garlic stuff. IT STINKS...be prepared....

A freind of mine purchased one of the expensive skeeter-eater modles a few years ago. He was unimpressed -- he called to company and they admitted it doesn't work on all types of mosquitoes including the Asian Tiger mosquitoes.
I've found spraying the back yard with a lawn insectacide (the type you attach to a hose) works, but only for a few days.

My parents have a Mosquito Deleto (Sp?) that uses a propane tank to produce a very small flame that produces CO2 which is supposed to fool the bugs into thinking the machine is the exhaled breath of some mammal and then lures them into this glue trap thing. They didn't think the thing actually cut down on the little bastards.

Posted by: Anonymous at March 30, 2006 9:32 PM

Has anyone tried getting frogs in a pond?
They do the job in Australia on my aunt's farm...dunno if they're Asian tiger mozzies or not though, but the frogs certainly look happy and fat. And sort of...musical. In a way.

Posted by: Anonymous at March 30, 2006 9:42 PM

My folks put one of those propane mosquito-eater things up and said it worked very well. I'm inclined to believe it wasn't just their imaginations because this is in Maine, basically in a pine forest, and the mosquitos are terrifying.

Posted by: BklynJace at March 31, 2006 2:24 PM

Ack! We had those damn tiger mosq's too and stayed out of the garden b/c of it. So glad you wrote, but it looks like there isn't much to do? No way am I spraying pesticides especially because they don't last any time at all. And the bummer is that if your neighbor isn't doing anything for it they just come right on over.

I did some research last year (and those mosq's are hitting the country hard) and will put my husband the sustainable gardener on it to see what kind of natural alternative he can come up with. I like the frog idea, but have to say I saw a documentary about frogs in Australia and they have really multiplied and become quite a problem in and of them selves (if it is the same frogs - big fellas...I think they were toads.)

I was looking forward to this summer until I was reminded of those damn things. shoot.

I just realized I have a catalog called Gardeners Supply (they're also online), and they sell a number of different (non-toxic) mosquito control products. I might order a couple of items to see how well they work, although I think the Asian Tigers are a breed onto themselves and might be tough to repel. Worth a try anyway and not a big $$ expenditure.

Finally, someone else confirms my fears! Two years ago I was being eaten alive by these nasty day and evening mosquitos. Our place is on Union between Smith & Hoyt. It got so bad that I called the health department, who came out and set traps for 2 weeks to catch mosquitos.

I went and googled around and had myself alreayd determined they were asian tiger. But the woman who came out and took the samples for her research claimed after doing some analysis they were not asian tigers.

I still don't believe her. I have noticed that the mosquitoes in the back follow exactly the pattern Asian tigers are supposed to follow- highly aggressive, swarming, and not caring about it being day or evening.

So anyway, I ended up buying a MOsquito magnet, the Liberty version. It uses a propane tank, and can be used with or without an attractant. I have tried placing it in different places but so far not so much luck with it. It traps mosquitos but not enough to be perfect.

I went to Maine where I noticed a lot of people have the magnet, and they all swear by it-- I have to admit where there were mosquito magnets I definitley got bitten less.

But I don't think they are dealing wiht Asian tiger mosquitos.

Anon, 4:16 pm, I'm Anon 9:20 am, March 30, and I live on President between Smith and Hoyt. As you already know through your own research, google results for the Asian Tiger mosquito show a photo of a black mosquito with distinctive white markings on its body. That's exactly what was attacking us last summer, so I don't understand why the Health Dept would say otherwise. I agree with you, the google results specifically state these mosquitoes are aggressive, biting insects, anytime of day or night. They also bite through clothing, so exposed skin or not, last summer was really bad and we weren't able to enjoy our front or backyards. I was bitten alive while repainting the garden bench in my front yard, and this was mid-morning when you usually do not see mosquitoes.

Posted by: Anonymous at April 3, 2006 4:44 PM

Anon 9:20am, totally confused myself with the health department. I frankly think their nets and stinky material they put in there were not attractive to the asian tigers.

If you do look on google the areas where asian tigers are claimed to be are just shy south of us. They did indicate in multiple sites that the tiger is rapidly migrating though, although they were not sure how far north they would get.

I still have not been able to figure out where they are all breeding. THe sites indicate they need very little water, but I have tried to check every source and find none in my backyard. Perhaps Gowanus is just the ultimate spot and they all come out of there...

I'm just super bummed out the mosquito magnet has not really worked. Around august to september, we stop goign outside in the backyard. Even going to teh Carroll playground is oppressive.

YOu would think the city would try to do something to reduce the problem...

Posted by: Anonymous at April 5, 2006 11:03 AM

Anon 11:03, I'm with you. I think that the West Nile mosquito has occupied more DOH attention in recent years, and I doubt anything will be done unless the Tigers start seriously swarming and cause disease...which I hope doesn't happen. Given the dozens of bites family members and I suffered last summer, we didn't get sick, thank goodness, except for significant skin irritation. I wouldn't be surprised if the Canal is the source. As you said, the Tigers are migrating from the south, and in light of that, I fear that last year might have been the outer fringe of the northward migration. By the way, I just ordered some mosquito bait products from Gardeners Supply (www.gardeners.com), and I have a fleeting hope that these products might help. Good luck to all of us this summer!

Posted by: Anonymous at April 5, 2006 4:41 PM

Try blocks of dry ice. I haven't tried it yet but recently I was watching the Food Network with Alton Brown and he mentioned the incidental benefit of dry ice for dispelling mosquitos in the the backyard. Good luck! It would be interesting to see if it works.
