What is it and how do I get rid of it?
We recently moved into a prewar limestone with this lovely mirror built-in. Unfortunately, it seems to be inextricably linked to a (modern) shiny lamp fixture. I hate it. But if we take it out, it'll leave a big hole in the mirror. And since this is the only lamp in the hallway, and since we don't have the money to spend on an electrician for this, I'm hesitant to lose the light. Any suggestions on what we could do (replace the mirror and just deal with losing the light? replace lamp with something less gaudy?) would be very much appreciated.

I don't really like the mirror either. I'd get rid of it, patch wall and hang a sconce.

You shouldn't need an electrician to replace the light fixture. Get a how-to book from the library and a replacement fixture you like, turn off the power breaker, then just replace it.
All there is to replacing a light fixture is connecting two wires with some wire nuts.

Tim is right, it's really easy to replace electric fixtures, I've done about 4 or 5, and I have a healthy respect and fear of electricity, and didn't think I could do it. It's actually hard to mess it up, just flip the breaker off first, can't say that enough times.
You could also try to age the fixture with paint or a vertigris type solution. Check the DIY section of HGTV shows, or the site of someone like Debbie Travis (also on HGTV), or magazines and books. Refinishing metal fixtures is done a lot. Doing that and then replacing the new glass shades with antiques, which are pretty easily found locally or on Ebay, may change them into something you really like.
