Basement Dig
We recently moved into a brownstone in Carrol Gardens. The basement has a dirt floor, which prevents us from using it for storage -- everything gets covered with fine dust. We would like to lay a concrete floor, but are first considering digging down a foot or so to gain extra height. Does anyone have any idea of cost for digging out a 600 sq/ft section of the basement and laying concrete. Also any recomendations for a decent contractor to do the work. Thanks in advance.

We just did this work in our brownstone (digging for adequate ceiling height and adding a concrete floor) and it cost about $12,000.

I did the exact same thing, about the same size too, and he orginally quoted me $8,000. It ended up costing me $10,000 (also put in brand new stairs to reach the deeper floor and it ended up requiring a new foundation wall too.) Not sure why he didn't see that coming, but he worked fast and did a good job. His name is Hossain - 718-972-4646.

I'd like to do the same type of project but have been a bit intimidated because this more than just a cosmetic job:
I have been told that you have to figure out how deep your foundation walls go before you do anything because you should not dig more than 1 foot above where the walls end. That would mean that the bottom of your concrete floor is at least 1 foot higher than the bottom of the foundation. My understanding is if you dig any lower, you threaten the very roots of your abode.
Can anyone confirm (or disspell) my worries?
