Combining Two Bedrooms
I would like to have the two front facing bedrooms in my Bay Ridge limestone made into one. As far as I can tell this is a fairly common practice as I saw many homes where that wall had been removed when I was house-hunting.
If anybody has had this done and/or knows of anyone capable of this job, please share their contact info with me.

That wall between the rooms is a load bearing wall. You cant just take it out. When it is removed you need two columns and a beam to replace the are it was in. You need an engineer to look at it before any thing gets taken out. In homes were you see that top bedroom as one big room wall to wall of the house there is usually an origianl arch that is supporting the load.

You can avoid the beam by opening up the entire ceiling and "sistering" all the joists. This involves bolting a second joist to each existing joist thereby creating heftier timbers capable of spanning the entire distance.
All of this assumes you are willing to sacrifice the current ceilings and any decorative work they may have. Also you still need an engineer or architect to spec out the size of the joists etc.
Most people just do what the original poster suggested. It's a lot eaiser and less expensive.

You should have a professional carpenter and or building inspector come in and check to make sure you are not wanting to remove a load bearing wall.
