Windows Questions

I am replacing 6 windows in my apartment in Brooklyn Heights. They are not at the front of the building so I believe we do not need to worry about landmark codes. We are considering two companies- Park Slope Glass, and Innoworks (Eddie Pagan is the contractor's name). Does anyone have feedback about either of these places? Innoworks is giving us a musch better price, and will actually be doing more work (replacing the windowsills and adding moulding to the borders) but they are only insured- not liscenced... is this a problem? Also- we are looking at Pella Pro-line windows- are these good quality? We currently have single pane windows with storm windos- both companies are telling us that with the new windows we will not need the storm windows- that they will remove them- is this a good idea?

Thank you in advance for any feedback- we are new at the renovation thing and just want to do it right.

Landmarks will still want to look at what windows you put in at the back -- the rules are somewhat more lax than the front.

Don't know anything about Innoworks, but didn't have a good experience with PSG. Maybe they are good, but they seemed busy at the time they dealt with us, and that meant messiness and lack of attention to detail. Also their guy who came to the house was really sleazy and trying to convince us to deal with him directly and go around the company.
Custom windows from them are going to be so much more expensive than just buying pre-made Pellas! If you're sure it's not a Landmark issue that is...they're not visible from the street behind you? If your windows are not a weird size or shape, do your homework at Lowes or Home Depot and order your windows from a standard sizes book, you will save THOUSANDS of dollars.
Does seem questionable to use someone who doesn't have a license...wouldn't advise it. The last person we used who didn't have a license turned out to be a big crook, stealing money from losts of different folks who found out too late.
Do get insulated windows though, for energy efficiency. And a wood interior/exterior window is much more attractive than vinyl or aluminum on the outside, even if you don't need Landmark's approval (you sure about that?).

You might also give a call to Bernie's Glass on Fulton Street in Bed Stuy. Wejust bought a brownstone here and have been there a few timesfor replacement parts for our windows. They are straight forward, friendlyand do very good work. They have references (every time I have been there there are regulars there, and they have been in this neighborhood for years) and they are affordable. They are liscened and insured (and yes a liscence is important for the work incase the building department gets involved for some reason) Their number is 718-467-4858.
