SOD

Can anybody recommend a good place to get grass sod from?
I'm in the Park Slope area.

Thanks

I had sod installed by Chelsea Garden Center in Manhattan. I think they did a good job, but most of it died. I don't think it was their fault. They did do an excellent job of totally getting rid of a huge stump that everyone else would only agree to grind down.

Home Depot. They sell sod by the truck load. It comes from eastern LI. If u install the stuff yourself, make sure the ground is level and water the heck out of it for 2-3 weeks. As I was told, if u think it was watered long enuf, water it some more.

I saw some at Home Depot last weekend as well. It was $3 and change for an 18" by 5' strip so about .50/sq ft.

I did a little research on the installation, it looks like it is best to rent a tiller to prepare the soil, level the yard, lay the sod, and then use a roller to make sure it has good contact with the underlying groung. As the previous post mentioned, watering is key, it needs to be watered at least once a day if not more for the first few weeks.

When looking at all the effort involved, I opted for seed, much cheaper, much less work. True it will take time but I can wait.

We ordered ours through the Midtown Florist island kiosk on Flatbush and Atlantic. To my surprise, they were the lowest price that I found, and although they needed 5 days lead time, they delivered it to my house the same day is arrived so it was nice and fresh. It took very nicely.

We got ours from A&S Whitestone (http://www.aswhitestone.com/) - very good quality, and they deliver to Brooklyn.
