Home Depot Expo

Has anyone renovated a kitchen or bath using Home Depot Expo's design and installation services? How was the experience/product? Thank you!

We compared Home Depot versus Ikea pretty closely and IKEA was both nicer and cheaper in our opinion...

home depot expo stuff also seems a little cheesy and faux antique - like much of the stuff the use in extreme makeover home edition...

Neighbors in Brooklyn Heights warned me not to use Home Depot. But I thought positive thoughts and courtesy would get me through so I signed their design contract and paid my $100 for a kitchen measurement (not a big deal) which was scheduled between 9:00 and 12:00 on a Saturday a month in advance. When the guy finally showed up at 6:30pm he breezed in and breezed out telling me about his car that was stolen, yadda-yadda-yadda. Then after a month of un-returned phone calls (they're supposed to get back to you after your measurement) I finally had to call Atlanta in order to get my "design" appointment (in another month). When I showed up at my appointment in the department all the desks and chairs were busy so I had to stand in heels on linoleum for my 1-1/2 hr appt. The designer was great but kept insisting that (based on my "expert measurement") I couldn't possibly try to replace my current 3-15" across cabinet configuration because I didn't have enough space (the expert measurer said so.) I measured and re-measured over and over, and I continued to come up with 45" across (tiny kitchen). When I tried to politely argue my case (after many patternmaking classes at FIT believe me I can measure) Home Depot said they "stand by their measurers" but if I insisted I could pay for another measurement (this time $150). Still trying to maintain a good head about the whole thing, I said "alright I guess I have no option, can you take my credit card number over the phone?" was told, "no, you have to come and pay in person." So during the week before Christmas I ran down 40 blocks in the freezing rain to pay before they closed. When I got there the kitchen department had only one person working there who was "busy." So I went to customer service and they said, "you have to pay in the kitchen department." So I stood and stood, waiting for the busy one not to be busy. When I quietly and diplomatically asked for a manager, there was no manager around. The place was full of customers, but no staff. Well to make a long story short I soon lost my cool and stood in the middle of Home Depot on 23rd Street yelling. My neighbors in Brooklyn Heights were right, stay away from Home Depot.

We used Expo in Queens to design a new kitchen for our Carroll Gardens house. The kitchen was being move up one floor, so there was less of a need to worry about pipe locations; and we already had a pretty good idea of what we wanted. At Expo you put $750 down for their design (and measurement) services. Once you pay for your cabinets, etc. you get that money back.

While the show rooms are always busy, there's usually someone around to answer questions. But once you have paid your $750 (having decided on Expo) you make one or two appointments with your assigned designer (one is at your house). Our designer was really great and helped us pick our cabintes and appliances. They have a wide selection of both. We picked modern flat panel cherry cabinets from Embassy, but they have all types -- from Ikea-like modern frameless to traditional designs.

In the end loved the cabinets we picked out, and the design we ended up with is perfect. Our GC did the installation, though, so I cannot comment on that aspect.

I suspect that the 23rd St. Home Depot is not really set up for the kind of work a real Expo outlet does. We had a smooth experience at the Queens Expo, and I would recommend them to anyone.

Check out Lowe's too.

I don't think "home depot" vs Ikea is a meaningful comparison, because HD has like 5 compeletly different cabinet companies they stock, whereas Ikea is just one. With HD's higher end brands you can get features which Ikea doesn't have like cabinets made of all solid wood. Also, some of those cabinets that HD sells are also sold by the smaller players for a bigger mark-up. So if you don't like to deal with that "big box" service model, you can go to one of those places.

Check out today's (Friday, 4/28/05) Wall Street Journal...there is a great article about the various design services offered by the HD, Lowe's and HomeExpo.

I know this posting is a bit late...but I just went through this exact situation -- deciding whether to re-do my kitchen through Home Depot, Lowes or Ikea. I actually used Expo to do my Master bath design -- went to the one on Long Island because a designer located there was highly recommmended a friend. She was great, incredibly attentive...you get the design fee back after you purchase $5000 worth of goods there (only worth it if you are doing a major reno)...but when it came time to do the kitchen I was looking for ways to save money. I checked out Lowes ( by the Gowanus), and I have to say I was impressed with their kitchen design services. Joan is fantastic there. Even so, I couldn't justify paying for even the lower line of their cabinets when I knew I could get something I'd be just as happy with at Ikea. No, they won't help you design at Ikea, but they have plenty of choices, and they have a kitchen planning book for you to do it yourself (Keep in mind when they arrive, it's true, parts are always missing, like some of the mounting hardware). It's worth spending a day out there, looking at their options, taking measurements. I spent well under $1000 for my 11 ft long kitchen, and in the end you can't tell the difference between mine and a $20,000 Poliform or Boffi kitchen. It looks fabulous and doing the designing myself was well worth saving so much money.

I've managed to save up roughly $26782 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?
