Digging out a cellar

Does anybody have any idea how much it would cost to dig out a cement-floored cellar? The ceilings in the cellar of my house come in at just under 6 feet high, making it difficult for me to stand up without hitting my head. If feasible, I'd like to lower the floor about a foot or so.

Also, any suggestions on people who could do the job well? Thanks.

A friend was quoted $75K by their contractor to dig out the cellar.

We had this done for $11,000, not by someone I would recommend. Be careful in planning this work. There are code requirements for ceiling height and also some cellars if they are more than half way below grade are not allowed to be converted to living space. This will effect your ability to rent or sell in the future.

What's the limiting factor that determines how far down you can dig?
I assume it's the foundation, how deep is that usually?

Be really careful and use a structural engineer. Several friends have caused major damage to upper floors of their house by doing this, without engineer. Remember the foundation is supported laterally by earth on both sides; when you take away one side you may cause serious sideways movement.
