ipe roof deck?

Anybody built a wood roof deck on a brownstone? I understand that NYC buildings/fire code doesn't let you build on more than 20% of the roof area with combustible material.

But I also hear that ipe wood is "Class A" fire-rated and isn't considered combustible material. Could I build an ipe deck over most of the roof?

It's a very durable tropical hardwood also known as ironwood (and is eco-friendly apparently).

do you really think the dob is gonna differentiate between one type of wood and another?
get ready for the "citizen vs the system" in the battle of the obviously correct vs. city hall.
the other issue is the use of the roof. not the combustibility on the material. actually (i could be wrong) but i believe the 20 or 25% you can build must be non combustible, and must be 3 feet from the parapet wall or have its own railing.

I had a nightmare experience with a deck in a brownstone coop some years ago. aside from the 20% limit, the material you use needs to have an MEA or MSA number (ie, have been tested and licensed to the city's satisfaction, regardless how fire resistant you think it is). there are also engineering issues in how you build the deck. you better get yourself a very good architect. laura
