Wood Floors

I wanted to get recommendations for people who refinish wood floors. The floors in question are in pretty good shape so just need a light sanding, etc. Also, if there are people out there who have done this kind of work on their own before, is it the kind of thing someone can do on his or her own without previous experience or is it best left to the professionals?

I had some new floors put down by Verrazano Flooring - they did a good job (efficient, on time etc.) but are kind of expensive. I know they do refinishing. They did the work in a difficult Co-op so they are over-insured etc.

Lots of people will tell you to rent a sander and do it yourself...from what I've seen you need some practice before this is as "easy" as people say!

Best bet is to rent the orbital floor sander at Home Depot. It's almost impossible to make a mistake. Be sure to buy extra sand paper as it tends to eat them up quick. You can bring the extras back. 65 a day last time I rented

Worst suggestion is to do it yourself. It is very easy to really screw up wood floors. Get a professional. $1.50 per s.f. is about the going rate.

Using a drum sander without experience is a no- no and I agree it's easy to mess up a nice floor quickly with the drum sander. However, I know three people without prior experience that used the orbital floor sander with great results. Its up to you.

I have friends that have done it themselves on houses on long island with good results. I would only hire a professional for my 100+ year old floors. I've used Precision Flooring to remove ugly linolium glued to the floor in the staircase area. Alwin did a great job. His number is 718-629-9589.

We used Fleetwood Floors for our place and were happy enough with the result. I think they charged us $2500 for 2 floors of a brownstone. They did 3 coats: one prep and 2 poly.
Admittedly I didn't educate myself too much before going with them but Fleetwood is also recommended on parkslopeparents.com. Joe Kerry @
914-776-9548 Beeper: 914-585-0316 are the numbers on the site. They did leave us 2 VERY heavy bags of wood dust for us to dispose of. Next time I'd ask them to remove as well.

I'm just repeating what others have said, but: orbital sander-- yes! It takes a little while (& strong arms) to get the feel of it, but you won't be destroying anything in the process. Drum sander-- no!! By the time you've figured it out, you may not have much flooring left.

I feel like an empty room, but eh. Nothing seems worth doing. I haven't gotten much done today.
