Fire Escape or Sprinkler?

I recently bought a four story, three family brownstone. Currently, it has neither a fire escape nor a sprinkler (my understanding is that you need one or the other for 3 or more family buildings). I would like to know if people have any opinion on which one (fire escape or sprinkler) is more economical and/or preferable - and then if people have references for either job.
Thanks.

Believe me, I looked into it and worked with the department of buildings to make sure. It is a valid three family building (and it is refelcted as such on propertyshark). That being said, it does need either a fire escape or a sprinkler in the stairway to be up to code. That's why I posed the question in the first place. Thanks for your concern.

no problem .. i once put a fire escape in 1f my buildings ( 4 story brownstone) . it ran me 9 k 3 yrs ago. dont even think of doing sprinkler its way more expensive. plus there's a ton of damage done to bring in new water main , run the pipes up the building .. that will easilly run 20 k ..good luck

We bought an SRO and are turning it into a 2-Family. We decided to keep the sprinkler even though we are not required to. We'll shorten and cap a bunch of the lines, but we like the idea of the sprinkler being there if there is a fire!
