Multiple Skylight Questions
I’m very bothered by our current skylights for a couple of reasons… they vent, which means leaves and dust come in, along with snow and air, but only a little air, which means you just lose heat and cool, without generating any real airflow. I would love to replace our main skylight over the brownstone stairs with something that is sealed when I want it sealed, and open when I want it open. Has anyone done this? Is it legal to have a sealed skylight, or does the code require everyone to bleed heat / ac through a big hole in their roof? If you do something counter to code like this, do you hurt re-sale value? TIA!
Skylight Building Code Expertise
Hi – following up on an earlier post re skylights, I’m trying to understand the code requirements for glazing of skylights over shafts and stairwells. The code reads “(2) GLAZING. -
a. Skylights over stairways and shafts. – Skylights
placed over stairways and shafts shall be glazed with
plain glass not more than one-eighth inch thick or
unreinforced plastic not more than three-sixteenths of
an inch thick.”.
I have two single-pane pyramid skylights there and want to replace them ideally with fixed, flat double-paned glass ones. The original venting uses are probably not as important anymore, but I don’t understand whether the code prohibits the installation of those ones. Can anyone help me understand what’s allowed? Thanks
Skylights – installation recommendation
I am looking to replace 2 leaky old skylights (above lightshafts), of the metal frame with wired glass variety seen on lots of brownstones. I’m thinking of replacing with double pane fixed skylights. Could anyone give recommendations for the installers and an idea of how much replacing them would cost? Thanks
Leaking Skylight
Does anyone have someone they can recommend to fix a leaking skylight?
I have no information on the manufacturer, but the damn thing has sprung a leak. Is it something I can do myself? What does one use?
Thanks
Leaking Skylight
This isn’t my skylight but it’s similar. Today’s post Xmas sideways storm has forced snow into cracks in my skylight and caused an ice formation that has started to drip into onto the protective glass and run into my stairwell.
While i’m not about to go out there tonight, i’m hoping for a quick end to the storm and homing someone can actually mend these cracks – anyone know who might be able to attend to this? Does silicone actually work in below freezing weather? Thanks and happy holidays….
Skylight glass
We’re putting in new skylights – one over the stairwell and one over a shower.
The question is clear glass or frosted.
Any opinions?
skylight over coal chute
anyone with experience using a skylight over an old coal chute leading to the cellar?
Hip Ridge Skylight
My building has a framed opening for an 8′ x 10′ skylight that has long s been covered up. I want to put a skylight back in that opening. I’m looking for recommendations regarding companies and/or contractors who do this type of work. I need measurements to be taken and coordination of the order and installation. I want the skylight to be insulated. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I want to get a skylight that can be opened, any suggestions where to buy?
Skylight Cage Requirements
Does any one know what are the requirements around the roof skylight? The dob is asking us to build a cage around it but no clear answer around the shape, the height and the look of this cage. Can it be just a square around the skylight? My contractor and my architect never heard of it. Please help.
