Need a New Gutter
We need a new gutter and downspout at the back of our house. I don’t think it’s a huge job. I’m assuming that we would call a roofer for a gutter. Can anyone recommend a roofer that will do a small job? Most seem like they’re really busy after the very snowy winter!
Roof Repair Question
Hi! Guy came around today repairing roofs on the block. He just happened to catch me at home and offered to give us an estimate. He climbed up and took some iPhone picks that showed the silver paint is wearing off and we had some cracks at the seams and near the chimneys. He said he could repair today for $900. I searched the archieves quickly to see if it was a decent price and it seemed fair but wanted to throw up a quick post to confirm. Our home inspection was done in 2006 and I am embarassed to admit I haven’t set eyes on the roof since then. It’s a flat, rubber roof with silver coating and about 10 years old. Thoughts? Comments? Trying not to be a naive housewife.
Thanks!
Roof on Brownstone Extension
We own a Brownstone. It has one of those small 8×8 extensions in the back. 3 years ago we had it knocked down and rebuilt. The guy who put the roof on, literally put plywood and tarpaper on top. No pitch to the roof and it hangs out about 6 inches over the extension on 3 sides.
Immediately the extension started to flood after heavy rains. At first I thought water was collecting on the neighbors side. The builder came back and put tar on the roof and tar on the ground.
Still no luck. Lately it’s also been leaking inside from the ceiling.
Any recommendations on handymen or roofers that do small jobs like this?
Remember, this used to be one of those tar paper shacks very common with brownstones. Now it’s a Block and tar paper shack that leaks.

Workers remove roof from house
the house behind me is an old rectory which has been boarded up for a long time. Two weeks ago some workers showed up, climbed onto the roof and had at it with axes and sledgehammers. They yanked all the roofing material off and carted it away. There still appears to be roof timbers present but it’s totally open to the elements now.
An old guy from the block said they told him they were ‘renovating’ the house, and that the house is ‘landmarked’. This seems highly unlikely since no houses in this area (Bushwick) are landmarked.
It’s been two weeks since they did this and they haven’t been back. Is it possible they’re trying to accelerate the building’s demise? I don’t really have a dog in this hunt, but it seemed weird so I thought I would ask.
Silver Roof Paint Questions
I own a 2 family wood frame house in Bushwick. I recently had half of my roof recovered with white sbs modified bitumen, to repar some leaks. The other half is torch down rubber, which was put down less than 2 years ago. (probably illegally, but before I owned the house).
The rubber is dark, and I want to paint it to reduce heat in the upstairs apartment, as well as protect it, and I’m wondering if the Karnak aluminum paint found in home depot is the right stuff.
There is one with fiber and the another without, I was wondering the purpose of the fiber, and which is best.
Also, it says on the label to machine mix it, does home depot do that, or do I need to deal with that myself.
The other thing is, should I paint the sbs portion of the roof as well, or is it not necessary because it’s white, and is there a danger of damaging it with the silver paint?
Thanks
BTW the roofer I used was recommended to me by Nick @ Leakmaster; John Mastroianni, I’m very happy with his work and price.
What is This?
Does anyone know what this enormous pipe is coming out of the skylight? I need to rebuild the roof and I’m not sure if I can just take this out, or if it has some mysterious purpose that I’m not aware of. In it’s current form it provides ventalation for the bathroom, but I can’t imagine that I would need to keep something this large. Any info advice would be much appreciated. Thanks
When to call the roofer?
Hi-
We should be closing on a townhouse in Ditmas Park in a month. It needs a new roof. When would you suggest calling roofers for estimates/interviews? The house needs a ton of work and we want to start right after closing.
Thanks!
Roof maintenance
Has anyone ever worked with Stewart Roofing? They are doing my neighbor’s roof, and they approached us with an offer to seal and coat our flat roof with a 5 year guarantee for $850 if we do it today (since they are here already). Does anyone have any experience with them? And also is that a good price for this type of maintenance roof job? Frankly, I’m not even sure if we need it right now, but I suppose it would give us peace of mind that we won’t need to worry about our roof for the next 5 years. Any advice/feedback today would be much appreciated! Also would welcome tips about what we should make sure they do as part of this job, and any preference on materials, should we go ahead.
Roofing rec
We had Nick Kontzamanis at Leakmasters come over to look at a leak in our roof after the last big rain. He said it wasn’t a big leak and the roof has some more life left in it. So he patched it, gave us a roof patching lesson (old roof/ new new homeowners) and left without accepting any money. He was really nice and we will probably see him again in 5 years when patching doesn’t cut it anymore.

KEMPER ROOFING SYSTEM
Has anyone ever installed a KEMPER ROOFING SYSTEM?
http://www.kemper-system.com/US/eng/applications/
It’s a liquid-applied roof so it doesn’t have seams (and doesn’t use overlapping “rolls†of material that have to be glued down).
Any information, experiences, anecdotes or cost/performance history would be appreciated.
Thanks.
