Door lock Suggestions

I’m starting to move into a new apartment tomorrow. I’d like to install a new lock on the door to the apartment. Anyone have any recommendations for a secure, solid and dependable lock? Also – where should I go? Lowes? Home Depot? Or any local joints?

Lock DIY?

I have two deadbolts on my front door, one of which is a surface-mount Segal double-cylinder lock. I’d like to change the keys following construction and I’m wondering how difficult it is to replace the cylinders, whether replacement cylinders are readily available from Segal, and how difficult of a job this is. Since the lock is already installed it seems like it’s a matter of taking out some screws, popping out the old cylinders, and replacing the screws but I haven’t done this before. Also, I’m not finding a lot of Segal replacement cylinders online, which may be due to the company being acquired and products being made under license by another company. Can I use other brand cylinders? Anyone familiar with security pros/cons of surface mounted vs. mortise deadbolts? Also, are double cylinders sold as a unit or do I just buy two singles? Thanks.

Safe “Cracker” Recommendation?

Can anyone recommend a local company or craftsman who can open up an old safe and restore or replace the locking mechanism? My husband and I bought our house a few years ago; our purchase included the previous owners’ furniture and also included a massive old safe which is secured to the floor in the boiler room in the cellar. It’s a combination lock, and I can’t see any keyhole. The safe already was in the house when the previous owners bought it in the 1960s and they never opened it. Any recommendations are very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Locksmith to install deadbolts

Does anyone have recommendation for an inexpensive locksmith to change the locks on five doors? I would buy the locks myself. The last quote I got was for $200. That is really expensive. Thanks.

Floor Safe Removal

Hi, we have a situation here that has been decades coming. We are the owners of 1 family brownstone that we having been renting since the 80′s. At some point, one of the tenants installed a floor safe in one of the closets. He left it behind when he moved, and it has been there ever since. No one has ever really cared much about it, but our new tenants want it out. It is a small safe, bolted to the floor, and as far as we know there’s nothing in it.

Does anyone here know of a locksmith or Safe company that can open this thing and get the bolts out of the floor? We know nothing about safes, and from what we have read online, it looks like the only option would be to destroy the floor in order to get it out, which, of course, we would like to avoid.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Antique Door Entry Set Reinstall

I want to reinstall the original door entry (Arlington RHO 1295)on my 100 year old front door but I am missing the interior mortise lock. I went to one locksmith who explained that the distance between the door knob hole and the cylinder hole would be very hard to match and he couldn’t help me. Does anyone know of a supplier/installer that specializes in this sort of thing?
