Locksmith: Iron Welding & Gate Lockin Bklyn
Hi All,
We need to replace the lock in our front garden level door gate. The current lock is installed into a single plate of iron and the barrel protrudes out of the front of the gate. In order for the a new lock to be installed securely and flush with the front of the gate, an iron box needs to be made and welded into the gate. Has anyone had this type of work done by a Brooklyn locksmith? If so, will you please post a recommendation and ballpark price? thank you very much!
Locksmiths
Does anyone have a recent recommendation for a locksmith? I checked out recent postings giving praise for a locksmith on 5th avenue. I checked it out it looks like there are two on 5th avenue. One is 5th Avenue Keyshop 222 5th ave 718-728-8143. The other is on 9th street called 5th Ave Key Shop 295 9th Street(718) 768-8643. It seems that the one on 9th street was recomended, but it gave me the creeps when I read a review by a woman who said she used the service and the guy was acting creepy, see post below. Any other recs?

Help With my Bedroom Door Knob
Help!!! I don’t know what kind of door knob I have and I want to go out and replace it. It is very annoying having people walk into my room without knocking or barging in after waiting one second of knocking. Plus I feel a lot safer having a door that can lock. I would like to know what type of door knob it is and where I can purchase it. It doesn’t seem to have any screws holding it together. IT easily comes apart with a release button thingy. I don’t want to cut the door to put in a new door knob because I am only renting the house. I just want to replace it with a similar style but with a key lock. Please if anyone can help me I would really much appreciate it.
Locksmith Update
In response to my earlier post, a number of you recommended 5th Ave Locksmith. I want to add my support for these guys. As a recap, we had a recurring problem with keys getting stuck and the whole mechanism getting out of alignment, with an outdoor side gate lock. I first let my fingers do the walking and called a “local” locksmith who turned out to be a rip-off artist, whom I sent away for reasons that will become obvious below. Now, problem solved with 5th Ave. Here’s the play by play:
Rip off artist — $29.95 just to visit
5th Ave — free estimate
ROA – looked at lock for 30 secs before giving estimate
5th Ave — took lock apart before giving estimate
ROA – said screw heads were sawed off so he couldn’t remove lock without drilling into gate to remove lock
5th Ave — had special screwdriver to remove screws with security heads
ROA – said lock had to be replaced without first opening it up to see what was wrong
5th Ave — opened lock up and diagnosed problem before determining that fixing, if possible, would cost as much as replacing
ROA — estimate was $475 (“Yale locks are really expensive”)
5th Ave — quote was $160 (“sorry it’s so much but exterior Yale locks are really expensive.”)
So yes, a hearty recommendation for 5th Ave Locksmith.
Sticky Exterior Lock
We have a tall side gate securing the alley at the side of our house. The gate has a Yale lock, unlocked by keys on both sides. The lock is now sticking a lot, and sometimes the key gets stuck. I managed to get the lock working again once or twice with some liquid teflon, and temporarily, but I think we really need a locksmith at this point. Two weeks ago, I called a local locksmith out of the yellow pages, who looked for 30 seconds, and told me he would have to replace it, and the cost would be $475. I sent the guy home. (The gate installer (Vinnie’s Italian Arts, of course), blunted the screw heads so the lock is not easily removable).
Any thoughts on an honest locksmith in Park/Slope/South Slope, WT/Greenwood etc.? Any thoughts on what replacing an exterior Yale lock for an iron gate should cost? Any thoughts on how easy this should be to repair? Any home remedies I should try?
As always, muchas gracias for the advice.

Best Locksmith
After getting several recommendations on this forum to upgrade my front door lock, I would like to know if people can recommend the most reasonable and well-qualified locksmith in the Northern Park Slope area or surrounding neighborhoods.
Thank you.
How to Avoid a Break-in?
My friend just told him someone broke into her house (without breaking the lock) and she happened to open her apartment door and see when he managed to escape. She was very shaken by this and I am now scared as well, as similarly to her I have a multiple-family brownstone on the edge of Park Slope.
What scares me the most is that some could easily break in without violent entry just by picking the lock. I want to make sure I do everything to avoid this situation. But I do not know where to start. Anyone has any recommendations? Should I get fake ADT signs? Should order a video camera? Is there a type of lock thats the most secure?
I would appreciate any pointers.
Thank you.
