Seeking recommendation for new hatch

My front hatch leaks like a sieve and I’d like a recommendation for an iron worker who can repair or replace it. Anyone had recent experience with DVS? Bay Ridge Iron Works? Others that you liked?

Iron Work Recommendation

I would like to wholeheartedly recommend Hanan Nichmani of Exclusive Iron Works, for high quality iron work.

Over the spring and summer, Hanan restored our historic iron fence, fabricated new sections to match the detailed original, and installed an automatic driveway gate opener and pedestrian gate closer, at our property on Lefferts Place. He also made two wonderful matching tree guards for our street tree pits.

The result is very beautiful work, which has received very favorable comments from friends and passers-by.

Hanan was very reasonably priced given the quality of the work. He faced some
technical challenges with the gate opener and gate closer, but kept coming back
until these were completely resolved. This is a tradesman you can rely on.
You can reach Hanan at:

Moving the Drop Ladder?

Is it possible to move the drop-ladder in this situation from the front of the platform to dropping off the left side of the platform? I understand it would involve opening up the left railing and closing off the front railing, but we’re doing some fire escape repairs so we were curious.

And yes, it is purely for aesthetic reasons- it blocks a beautiful view out the kitchen window. I realize this may seem silly, but a good view is priceless and it would really change the feel of the kitchen to look out on a nice yard instead of through bars.

Thoughts or advice appreciated.

great experience with Lopopolo Ironworks

Just wanted to give a positive shout-out to everyone about Lopopolo Ironworks who we found through a rec here on Brownstoner. They put in a new section of fire escape for our building. The owner, Joe, came out 3 times beforehand to make sure all my Qs were answered. Both install days went smoothly and the guys were all friendly and happy to explain and answer my Qs. Plus, they cleaned up real nice when the job was done. Couldn’t be happier with how it worked out and would gladly work with them again if I need ironwork in the future.

wrought iron window guards

I need to purchase window guards for my front parlor windows. Any suggestions? Preferably something that fits with the 1890 exterior, but not too expensive.
Thanks

Gate Work Recommendations

I need to replace a latch on our front gate. It’s a small job, but unfortunately, finding good work for small jobs seems much harder than finding people to do the big ones.

Any recommendations for a reasonably priced, honest, on time metal work contractor (I know, I know,.. sounds like I’m expecting the messiah) in Boerum Hill area who can do this, please give me a name and number.

Thanks so much.

Lead Risk in Scraping a Fire Escape?

I was wondering if anyone knew about the proper way to safely scrape down a rusty fire escape. Since most of that old paint is lead based, wouldn’t scraping it off put lead into the air? Of course I’d wear protective equipment, but how dangerous is that to tenants and/or neighbors? Is closing their windows enough? My bigger concern was the airborne part of it, but maybe that’s less risky since the work is being done outside?

Welding Metal Bed Slat

I purchased a used bed from someone and it turns out that one of the metal slats on the bed that holds up the mattress is broken. Wondering how easy it is to get someone to fix this and/or whether I should just get my money back. Anyone know who and how much?
