A Good Ironworker
I have just completed the framing of a back yard deck with the help of an excellent local iron worker – Joe Lopopolo of Lopopolo Iron Works, 2495 McDonald Avenue. Joe has worked in our neighborhood for many years, is responsive to your calls, timely in his performance and priced fairly. His crew comes on time, works without stop and completes their work without creating a mess. I have completed may renovations over the years in Park Slope and Ditmas Park and would not hesitate in recommending Joe for your iron work projects.
Rusting Post, Need to Paint It?
I made a mistake and put up the new posts to my driveway gate without painting it. So now the side of the steel post which is right next to the building is impossible to paint- the gap between the post and the wall is as little as a 1/8 inch in some spots. I can see after only a few months, there is rust building up in the crack there.
Any advice on how to get some paint on it to protect it from rusting?
Also, how bad is this to have bare metal unprotected? It’s 1/4 inch thick steel tube. Is it possible that after many years this could eventually compromise the metal post altogether? Thanks for any advice.
Oh and FYI- this was bought straight from the metal place so it wasn’t even primed, just bought as pure steel tube.
Need to Duplicate a Finial/Iron Worker
We have one finial that should sit at the bottom of our wrought iron railings that line the stoop. I need a mold made and a duplicate created.
Any suggestions? How expensive will this process be ?

Cost of Iron Stairs: Spiral vs. Straight
We’re installing stairs from our deck down to the garden. Our plans initially called for a spiral staircase – 3′ wide steps, going down like 9′, and this is what was in our contract. We’ve decided a straight stair makes more sense for a lot of reasons, and our contractor is saying this will be a lot more expensive – more than double. A lot of the job seems exactly the same, and some parts seem easier w/ the straight stair (covering the metal treads w/ wood would be a pain on pie wedge steps). Does this change seem reasonable? Advice welcome. Thanks!
Steel Well?
My contractor who is renovating basement at the moment has asked me about a steel well. I think he is referring to the trap door on street side which we would like to have a stairs going up into the well for egress. He is from out of state so is not familiar with suppliers here so it is my job to find one. I searched the forum and of course Dave in BedSty came up. Dave – anyone? Can you send me a site describing exactly what it is, what to buy?
thx
K
