Removing paint from cast iron fireplace cover
Hi stoners! Does anyone have any tips for removing paint from cast iron fireplace cover? I am thinking a heatgun could do this?

Fireplace Resoration

Interested in restoring three fireplaces. Two have that metal cover on it with a louver type grille that can be openned.

First question-
How were these FP’s used?wood? gas? they seem to shallow for wood burning.

What does a chimney guy/fireplace guy have to do to get it going again?how efficient are gas fireplaces?

Marble Hearth Help

We’re recently completing a renovation on an old brownstone. We couldn’t replace the subfloor on our parlor floor but did update the top flooring. The floor has a slope to it and this has created a tricky situation with a fireplace hearth that we need to replace. The bottom of the sides of the mantel and firebox are a few inches below the floor, so the hearth won’t appear even from the firebox outward into the parlor (probably an inch and a half difference in grade) without some clever marble design and placement. Curious if anybody has faced this or has experience with someone that has handled details like this before.

How do we use our fireplace with cast iron insert?

We live in a circa 1900 bldg with original fireplace/mantel. Anyone else have a cast iron fireplace insert (?) like the one shown here? Logistically, how do you use it? The rectangular piece in the center lifts out. Presumably we would need to leave the center piece out when burning a fire in order to be able to add wood, so we figure we need a screen when the fireplace is in use. Do you use a screen? If so, where do you keep the screen when you are not using the fireplace?

The Smoke Next Door

I rented a beautiful garden-level apartment in a brownstone and was told the fireplace works great. But whenever I light a fire, my next door neighbor complains she smells wood smoke and it REALLY bothers her. We’ve had two fireplace experts in, did a smokebomb test, and they didn’t see any cracks in fireplace liner. Is there something we’re missing? Another test? She’s so upset I’ll quit making fires -but am desperate to fix this. Thanks.

Wood stove in w/burg Condo

I own a new construction condo in williamsburg, ground level + celler level downstairs. The downstairs is COLD in the winter.. I want to put in a wood stove.
What do I need in terms of permits or condo permission to install the stove, and an exhaust chimney chase?
