Wet wall

Hi there,

With all the snow piling up and melting it looks like our house has sprung a leak.

I noticed the plaster discolored and paint bubbling up on our living room wall near a large settlement crack. It’s not far from the joint where an addition connects to the house and is also near where the rain gutter down spout is situated on the exterior.

Being a new home owner I’m not sure who I call to have this looked at; a roofer, a mason for the brick?

Would appreciate your advice and recommendations for repair people.

Thanks!

removing thoroseal

Can you remove thoroseal from a facade without damaging the brick underneath? Is ita hugely expensive job? The stuff is so ugly, and I’ve heard it’s actually bad for the building.

traditional trim for aluminum/vinyl siding

I’ve seen some recent residing jobs in brooklyn where the quality of the trim around the windows is much nicer than usual and looks much more like traditional stock trim (rather than j channels with no trim.) Anyone have info on companies that do this kind of work? One side of our house has siding, and we’re considering fixing the trim, as an interim fix before the eventual replacement of the whole thing with hardiplank or cedar.

Rope Scaffold Costs

Our co-op is determining costs to suppress a leak in our roof/windows…we were told a rope scaffold would cost $2000 alone – does this sound right?

Stone Window Sills

Hi!
Does anyone know where in Brooklyn that we can get 2 blue-stone/slate window sills like the one in the photo? Or even if there is a more specific name for them?
Thanks so much!!

Removing UGLY Facade

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure for what it would take to remove this facade and make the brick underneath look presentable? I realize it depends on the condition of the underlying brickwork so a range of figures would be helpful. Has anyone done a similar job and have pointers on things to consider?

This is a house that we’re thinking of making an offer on, but that ugliness could be a dealbreaker!

Cornice Repair, Permits, Scaffolding, Costs, Material

We have a cornice that is in need of light repairs and a fresh coat of paint. Our house comes right up to the sidewalk. I don’t know what I expected, but I am in shock about the first quote I got (from a wood restoration guy recommended often here and noted as being good and affordable), but i wasn’t expecting 11k plus permits! Now I am thinking fiberglass sounds great so I never have to pay for painting and scaffolding and permits again! I have seen lots of posts about fiberglass cornices running around 3k, but how about permits and scaffolding and insulation? How does that all work? How much have you paid for your cornice work? thanks.

Facade & Pointing

We were going to wait until Spring, but have noticed some major leaks into the apartment. Is it too risky to hire someone to do some cleaning and pointing this week – the temperature is supposed to be around 43-57 degrees ?
