Hardi, Cedar or Vinyl?
we need to replace our old aluminum siding. but since we live in lower windsor terrace where there’s lots of ugly siding, is it worth doing hardi? will we ever get our money out? (our house has three exposed sides so the estimates we’re getting are $50,000 +). also trying to decide if it’s worth the extra money to do extra insulation while we’re at it (there’s some wrapping with hardi that would provide some insulation). is it foolish to do cedar since it’s more maintenance than hardi? (it looks a little better to me). would appreciate any advice from anyone who’s gone through this process. as well as any contractor recs. many thanks.

Sandstone Facade Repair / Restoration
Our facade needs attention. It has survived the last 140 years and appears in good shape but the recent rains have caused some spalling in the carved detail in one spot. I would like to find a company that could stabilize the stone that is there and potentially even replace damaged pieces with new stone (rather than cement). Does anyone do this in Brooklyn (ever)? I have looked through the archives but haven’t found any references beyond ‘rebrownstoning’…

Brownstone Facade Word Before or After Rest of Renovation?
We are about to embark on a gut reno of a 3-story brownstone. The facade/stoop are in bad shape and we’re wondering if we need to wait til end of reno to redo facace/stoop? We’d prefer to get it done early (while awaiting permits for rest of reno and then have reno team protect the stoop) but is it better to wait til the very end and if so, what are pros and cons of doing facade & stoop at beginning vs. end? We also need to put in new windows and wonder if that affects redoing facade (openings will remain the same). Thanks!

Flaking Facade on Brownstone
Our brownstone is currently painted with brownstone colored paint – we bought it this way. I know the proper thing to do is to do the full stucco restoration, but I was hoping to wait a couple of years for this expense. What should I do in the meantime about this flaking paint? Can I scrape and repaint? Anyone have experience doing this? How long can I expect it to last? What would it cost? Is it feasible to DIY? And yes, we are on a landmark block… Thanks in advance!
