Reliaboard decking
I am considering replacing our existing (warping, crappy) wood decking with Timbertech “Reliaboard” decking. Anyone have any experience with this product? Pros? Cons? One complaint I’ve heard is that it really heats up a lot in the sun. OTOH, I hear it is easy to clean. Thoughts? Thanks.
Does a Roof Deck Count Toward FAR?
Hello,
I’m considering buying a single-family home in Brooklyn that is built to max FAR. I’d like to add a roof deck to the top. Is that something I could do under the zoning considering I have no available FAR? Thanks!
Deck Materials
I am considering changing out the boards on my existing deck (not a roof deck). I can do either IPE or a composite material. I am not someone who will maintain a wood finish so I am leaning toward the composite material. is using the composite a really bad idea ?
Decks
Does anyone have any recommendations on a deck builder or a deck refinisher ? (this is an outdoor deck vs a roof deck)

Metal Deck from a Fire Escape Platform
Hi all
Is it possible/legal to extend a fire escape platform and make it into a deck off the parlor floor with steps down to the garden?
(The house is a legal 3 family and was all to code in 2006)
If possible, how long does it take to get a permit.
Thanks.
Deck Recommendation
Thank you Brownstoner for all of the reviews. After shopping around, I went with Lopopolo Iron Works and finally got a metal, frame porch with concrete. They dug up the footings, put up the metal frame, mixed and poured their own cement, and installed a wrought iron fence and rail with metal steps. The company was very professional and actually got the job done earlier than promised; which is unheard of! I would highly recommend Lopopolo Ironworks! I feel like I got the best quality at the best price:) Lopopolo also has different designs on their website: www.ironworkdesigns.com
Quick Advice for Oiling an IPE Deck
Hi All, Last w/e I power washed my ipe deck. All the mildew and mess is gone, yay! So now I want to oil it (with Cabot’s Australian Timber Oil) to restore the original, lovely dark brown color. But am I ready yet? It’s certainly clean but mostly still a grey color (with a few brownish tints coming through). Will it turn brown when I apply the oil — there is some stain in the oil — or do I need to first sand it to actually take off that layer of silver weathering? Thanks for any advice you can offer.
Detached Deck Photo
Let’s see if the photo helps.
I’m wondering, does one need permits etc. to do a “detached” deck, meaning, not touching the building at all? You can see from the photo. Also wondering how much something like this might cost. It’s about 400 square feet.

Deck on Extension Roof
I’d like to build a deck over the roof of the 8×8 extension on the back of my brownstone in BedStuy (possibly with stairs to the garden), but I read in a previous post that “no wood within 3 foot from lot line” is aloud. Does that count for over the shack also? What about the shack itself, approved from DOB as existing on my permits, which is basically wood studs and playwood with wood siding and, like all the other extension is right on the lot line? I think the deck would be a great addition to the 1 floor kitchen, but I am not ready for the expensive ipe, Comments, suggestion?
thanks in advance, you guys are great, I wish I join you sooner (to many mistakes..)
