Someone to Re-Marble-ize Slate Mantles
I have the pieces (I hope all of them) of three slate mantles in my basement, which I’m hoping to re-install. They’re covered in about 500 layers of paint. I couldn’t save the original ‘marble’ finish, but the slate is 2 different colours. I think the best approach will be to restore the marbling to them. Can anyone recommend someone that might be able to do this for me?
Also any recommendations on someone to help work out the puzzle and get them re-installed? Most of the pieces are so heavy I can’t move them at all.
Thanks as always for the help!
Doors! (You know you want them)
Last chance! Get that special someone a nice pair of wooden doors for Christmas. Or maybe you just need doors…
I have:
1) Set of double doors – 4 panel, 94 3/4″ high, each 26 3/4″ wide, and 1 3/4″ thick.
2)French door – 12 panes of glass – 80″ x 30″ x 1 3/8″
3)4 panel door 78 1/2″ x 27 3/4″ x 1 1/4″
4) 4 panel door 27 12″ x 81 1/2″
Am going to try and post pictures (sorry they are taken from my blackberry and the tall ones are too tall to get far enough away from, but it should give you an idea).
I would really really really like to have these out of my living room before Christmas.

Wood care after paint stripper?
I just stripped a newel post with Peel Away, got it down to the wood, and rubbed it down with denatured alcohol as directed. However, a day later, the wood is starting to look bleached. Is this because there is still stripper on it, or is this an affect of the denatured alcohol? Does anyone know what I should treat it with to make it all nice and woody again? And after that, how to finish? Wax? Varnish? What would have been used traditionally?
Doors offered/doors needed
Through the generosity of a fellow brownstoner I have a whole lot of old doors. It turn out there are some I can’t use, so wanted to see if anyone is interested. I sent the whole lot to Dip ‘n’ Strip, so although I’m happy to pass on the doors for free, I would like to cover the stripping cost of $140 per door. (Trust me, it’s worth it – even the Dip ‘n’ Strip guys complained about how much paint was on these things.)

FREE Bag of Recycled Denim Insulation
I have an unopened bale of the Ultratouch recycled denim insulation R-30, if anyone would like it. It’s left over from doing the attic and has been acting as an impromptu baby gate for the last 12 months, but it is time for it to go. We’re in Jersey City. Email me at elizdoughty at gmail dot com if you’re interested in taking it.

Removing Gas Stove?
This seems like a dumb question, but should be an easy one for anyone who knows the answer… I want to remove the old gas stove from my kitchen and cap the pipe (we are not going to be using the stove in that location anymore). Who do I call to get this done? I found plenty of tutorials on doing it myself, which I don’t want to do – I don’t want to mess around with gas lines – and the rather cryptic recommendation to call ‘a qualified professional’ if I don’t want to do it myself. But who is ‘a qualified professional’? Do I call the gas company? They are generally idiots (a memorable month was the $12,000 bill for a one family house, after they misread the meter), so I would rather not if I don’t have to. Answers and/or recommendations appreciated. Thanks!
House History
I’ve been doing a lot of research (on and off) on the history of our house. Most recently I went to the library to look up the original occupants of the house in the directories and on the census. The first owner of the house’s occupation is listed in the directory first as a carver, then later as a designer (1899-1910). On the 1905 state census his occupation is listed as “shell carver”. I think this must have been to do with woodworking, especially since his sons were carpenters, but does anyone know exactly what this means? I wondered if it might be to do with inlays in furniture? If anyone has any insight I’d be very interested in hearing it!
Installing Doors
Can anyone tell me how hard it is to install door jambs, and if there is a good tutorial anywhere? The home improvement book only explains how to install pre-hung doors.
I have reasonably good woodworking skills, but if this is something better left to a professional, is there a rule of thumb for calculating the rough framing, based on the size of the door you are going to install? I would like to at least get the rough framing done.
LG Front Loading Dryer for sale
We have a stacking LG dryer that we bought along with the washer when we moved into our house 3 years ago, because my husband didn’t think that line-drying clothes was practical. However, I have proved him wrong, and we only ended up using the dryer about 6 times.
So it is basically brand new, and we’d like to sell it and make a bit more space in the house. We paid around $600 new, and are looking for $300 for it (O.B.O.) The dimensions are 27″W x 39″H x 29 5/8″D. As we never really used it I don’t have that much to say about its perfomance, but we do use the LG washer all time (baby in cloth diapers) and it has been absolutely fantastic.
The model # is DLE2514W
