Changes to the NHS Home Maintenance Training & Repair Course

I know many of you on Brownstoner had taken and thoroughly enjoyed the Home Maintenance Repair Course. You also made comments on how to further improve the course. Many of your comments have been taken into consideration. For 2011, the course had been reduced to six weeks and instead of a Level II, we’ve added an Electrical and Plumbing specalty course. Before, one had to take Level I as a prerequisite, now the specalty course is available to anyone who wants to take it. What was previous refered to as level I will cover the fundamentals of carpentry, tool usage, wood framing, tiling and other finishes. This is a trial and we’re awaiting to see the response from the community. I’m sure many Brownstoners here won’t shy away from letting your feeling known.

Former NHS Home Repair Students

I know some Brownstoners have taken the course in the past. Were you able to put your skills to good use this summer?

Did you team up with a class member and assisted them in doing more repairs?

The Fall 2010 class begins in September, what do you think should be improved?

Contractors, Contractors, Contractors

If you have had a great experience with a licensed and insured contractor i.e general contractors, electricians, roofers, boiler installers, plumbers, etc., etc. I’m especially interested if you had direct experience with them. My contractor list is very meager and I’m looking to expand it. Thanks.
