As part of our due diligence on a self-managed co-op, we learned that all tenants must do chores or be fined.

Chores ranged from taking out the garbage to sweeping the basement and boiler room to vacuuming the walk-up bldg, and are assigned on a rotating schedule. All required weekly work.

I’ve never heard of this before. I’ve heard of sharing taking-out-the-garbage duties, but nothing at this level. (To make it even more enticing: the maintenance is not exactly low.)

Is requiring tenants to do chores in co-ops common? I’ve researched it a bit and can’t really find an answer. Would appreciate any insight; not sure if we are being naive or just bad citizens. Thanks.
