Dog Mess


I am the owner of a house on a street that is quite literally covered in dog feces. It appears that NO ONE cleans up after their dog, leaving it to me – a non-dog owner – to clean up huge piles of mess on an almost every day basis. I am at my wit’s end. I called 311 several times to file complaints and asked for the Pooper Scooper signs to post, only to be told they no longer give them out. I love pets and take care to buy salt for my sidewalks that is safe for animals but this is simply disgusting and I don’t know how to fix this problem. Any advice brownstoners?

Dryer Smell


I have been smelling a weird smell from my dryer — it goes all through the house and is on the clothes, as well — that smells like that sooty charcoal smell you get when you first light a gas grill. I’ve had the gas valve on the dryer replaced and the ducting from the dryer out to the vent cleaned. Plus I had a booster fan installed. Yet still the smell persists. I get a low grade dizzying kind of headache from it but no carbon monoxide meters go off and not everyone is as sensitive to it as I am. What can I do do? Anyone have any ideas?

Buzzing Electrical Box


I just noticed that one of my electrical boxes is buzzing. What could this be? Is it dangerous? My other boxes are not making any noise. And this one never has before. Any ideas?

What Do You Call That Thing?


Forgive my ignorance but what is the proper name for the the trim piece that goes across the uppermost front of most brownstone facades? Is it the cornice? Mine seems to be made out of tin and has been battered by the rains and needs to be replaced. Can someone give me the correct terminology as well as a resource for its repair?

I’d like to find decorative tiles for a fireplace surround, preferably something blue and white that looks antique and is appropriate for a white wooden Victorian mantle. I am kind of a traditionalist stylistically. Any ideas on a vendor?
