I have to hand in a legal document tomorrow reflecting my income, which is sadly very low but does include rental income.

Do you think the state of NY would expect me to use the total amount of rent collected as income? Or alternately, would they expect rent collected minus my repair expenses, mortgage, and other possible operating expenses (what should they include by the way?)?

Any help welcome. Nothing gets to me quite like legal docs. I am posting in Taxes because there seems to be no Rental section.
