Made Deposit/Landlord Not Responded

hi – i recently made a $500 check deposit to put down to hold an apt. for future viewing. the landlord accepted my application. the apt. is being renovated, which is why no lease was signed at that time. both the landlord and super have been very amendable so far. but yesterday, i sent an email to the landlord to get a firm move date, so i can book movers, cable guy, etc. and, also to sign my lease. we both agreed to not sign a lease at the time of the deposit because the place needs massive renovations.

i find it odd that he hasn’t at least responded to say that he’ll see how far along the place is and get back to me.

any thoughts? am i just being paranoid? probably, hopefully. just curious about others have reacted in similar situations. i will try calling tomorrow, if i don’t get a response.

thanks!

Seeking Rental Advice

Hello -

I’m beginning to look for a studio/1 BR rental in Clinton Hill/Park Slope/Prospect Hts–or anywhere affordable for me. I’ve been perusing craigslist, but there seems to be a lot of non-legit postings, even on the ‘owner’ adds. I’ve also looked on various realtor sites and streeteasy. Also, I’ve relocated to NYC from another well-known city several hours away, so I am used to the competitive renting market. I’m currently renting an apt. in jersey from a friend, but my goal is to be closer to the city. So, I’d greatly appreciate key points that I need to know about renting in NYC.

So, if anyone can recommend respectable realtors (no fee–not in this economy, I’m sure it’s more than possible), areas I should check out, not on my list above, and just anything else I’m missing–then, please post here or email me direct at: newapt2010@gmail.com

Thanks! Looking forward to reading responses.

From Boston to Brooklyn by 11/1

hello – i will be relocating from boston to brooklyn within the next 2 months.

i’m familiar with various reputations near prospect park. i am on a tight budget so am looking for a studio under $1100. don’t laugh!
i know this will require being in not the most preferable areas.

can anyone tell me what areas in bed-stuy are relatively safe? and anywhere else for someone on a low budget. i’ve heard that once ‘bad’ neighborhoods are not so treacherous–everywhere is becoming gentrified. i know finding a place on my budget will be tough, but am optimistic that i’ll find something i can live with, as a starter apt. i’m just trying to avoid a roommate situation. i’m in my 30s now and unless it’s through a friend, i’m not going there.

i know about realtor gimmicks, etc. boston is not that different, so can handle my own, even in NY.

any realtor recommendations?

thanks much!
