Whether to install a Whole House Fan?


I’m in a detached 2-1/2 story house, and wondering if I should consider a whole house fan. I figure it could quickly cool the place on summer nights (at least when it gets cool outside), thus saving on AC. Anyone wish to encourage or discourage the idea? Any advice on buying or getting it installed? Thanks!

Replacing iron railing w/ wood balustrade


Our house is in a Brooklyn landmarked district. Our front porch has an iron railing, but both the original drawings and a Landmarks Commission document indicate that there was originally (in 1900) a wooden balustrade there.

I assume we’d be able to get approval to replace the railing. Any suggestions on who could do that work (removing the old and creating the new)? And should I expect that we’d be required to make the new fixture out of wood (all the new balustrades I find online are synthetic)?
