Window Restoration
Our house (1909) still has the original wood windows, plus butt-ugly white storms some genius installed back in the 70s. The original windows are in surprisingly decent shape and I don’t want to replace them, but they are still drafty and noisy, and I believe they could be restored and improved. However, I am having trouble finding someone who specializes in this type of work – the one person I found said “I don’t work in Brooklyn any more, those people are crazy.” (Cheers!) I also want to install less obtrusive storms. Has anyone had this done and can you recommend the company who did it?
Neighbors Not Shovelling Snow
So, I’m wondering if I can do anything about my neighbors who don’t shovel their snow. As in, they haven’t shoveled after ANY of the storms we’ve had. This is a problem in front of at least four houses on our block, which have narrow paths of packed-down ice at least three inches thick. I have tried ringing the doorbells a few times but never get any answer. Our lazy-ass next door neighbors moved out without making any shovelling arrangements, so my husband and a couple of other neighbors have been cleaning that walk, but it’s pretty ridiculous for us to have to go up and down the entire block cleaning up after peoplewho don’t maintain their own property. I’m not really one for ratting people out for petty shit, but the situation is getting to the point where it’s genuinely dangerous (actually, it passed that point a while back). It’s especially aggravating because a) there are several elderly people on our block and it’s just a matter of time until one of them gets hurt, and b) there are several young men who go door to door here offering to shovel walks for $10. Is there anyone I can call about this situation, and is it likely to actually accomplish anything?
Sink Console – Free to a Good Home
We are installing a new sink console and will be getting rid of the one shown. It is ~3 years old and in excellent condition, although obviously it has been installed and uninstalled. Comes with sink but not fixtures. If you want it, you must come and get it out of the basement and take it away once it is uninstalled, which should happen next week. Post your email if interested.
Need Emergency Plumber Rec!
I have a burst pipe at the back of my house which has caused my basement to partially flood. I currently have the water turned off to the entire house and need to get the pipe repaired ASAP. Hopefully someone can recommend a good plumber for emergency repairs in rooklyn – otherwise I will have to choose at random.

DOB Stop Work Order – what to do?
I have been having an existing bathroom in my brownstone’s English basement renovated. it was in really bad shape when I bought the place 6 months ago, so effectively everything in it is new at this point. It’s about 90% completed right now. Apparently one of my neighbors decided that I was having work done without permits, and snitched to the DoB about 3 months ago. The inspector came by the other day and issued a stop work order. I am confused because I didn’t think renoavations to an existing bathroom required permits. Anyone have thoughts on what I should do next? How do I prove that the bathroom isn’t new?
Old Door with Mirror Needs Work
I have an original door with a built-in mirror that the previous owners removed and stored, but that I would like to reuse. The built-in mirror is cracked and the door needs to be refinished. Does anyone have a recommendation for someone who could remove the old mirror and install a new one, and refinish the door in the process? It is a small job, but I would really like to preserve this old door.
