Anyone Know What This Tree Is?
I have this tree, about 7-8′ high and can’t figure out what it’s called. Most characteristic are the long (2″) thorns on all the branches. It eventually bears a citru-like fruit about 2-3″ round with a tough yellow skin. My neighbor made a jam out of them and said that it was very bitter & tart.
Anyone know?
Don’t have a utility sink in your basement?
Don’t have a utility sink in your basement because it’s lower than your soil pipe? I was just watching This Old House and they installed a Laundry Tray Pump. It installs as the drain of the sink and pumps the water to wherever you want to connect into your soil pipe. You also need a check valve in the line below the soil pipe. It plugs into an outlet, no hard wiring required. A ball valve after the check valve regulates the flow. These are much cheaper, easier to install than a sewage ejector.

Vila Glass replacement
I called Vila (on Ditmas Blvd) because they are used by my old condo building in Manhattan. I needed a double pane thermal insulated window glass replaced and the rising mechanism replaced on another one. They came promptly the next morning even calling 5 mins ahead to say they were on their way. The window was a custom size (about 32 x 40) so they said they’d be a few hours before they could get another one. Instead, I had them come back this morning and they were there prompty at 7:30!
The work took all of maybe 20 minutes. The thermal pane replacement was $145 and the spring mechanisms $75 and I was quite pleased.
These guys represent what a service business should be.

Recommending My flooring Guy
I just had my parlour floors redone…the main room was a thin red oak parquet with a Greek Key darker border. The second room was largely strip oak. Jose and his crew did a really fantastic job with stain and two coats of poly over the course of two days (had to move large furniture from one room to another), and left the place very clean. The floors only needed a light sanding, one at 40 grit and the last at 100 and they look fantastic. There were two pieces of the Greek key that they had to patch and they did a great job. I got the original recommendation for him here on brownstoner from mopar.

Heating Oil Coop
I just joined a heating oil coop in MA (I have gas here). This seems to be a very economically sound decision. The oil is $0.25 cents cheaper this way and delivered through my usual supplier. The fee was $36 so after 144 gallons you are paid back.
Here’s the Faqs and Questions sheet.
There is a list of coops in New York at the bottom and I think some of them supply Kings County.

Mira-Cool A/C Units…Get One Free
I saw the ad for this in Metro today and went on-line to find out how they work. THEY DON’T. This is a nationwide advertising scam apparently across the entire country.
The units work with ice cubes and water and won’t drop the temperature in a room at all.
