PrePayment Plan for Mortgage?


I consider myself pretty financially savvy, but what to make of this ‘early mortgage pay-off plan’ I recd from Fifth-3rd? It’s to enroll in direct-from-bank payment (fee $295 + $1/payment) and can choose bi-weekly to reduce term from 30->23 years.

So why can’t I just send in a extra payment every year (or extra per month) and save the fees? Can they refuse an extra payment if it’s not thru their plan?

Beetle Inspectors


Just had two people from USDA wanting to inspect backyard for Asian longhorn beetles. Is this legit…I was not comfortable with it and said no; they left me a form & a number to call.

Anyone know about this? What consequences if I don’t follow thru?

Tree Limb on Wires


There’s a small downed tree limb balanced on the cable/phone wires, straddling 3 backyards (the limb).

Whose responsibility is it? Verizon demurs. I’d take it down except it’s too high up to easily reach.

Front Loader Bearing Shot?


Aah if not one thing it’s another. 7yr old Frigidaire Gallery front loader making horribly loud rattles on spin. Spins quietly if empty. Expert Repair charged 75 to say “bearing can’t be fixed, buy a new one”.

Anyone know if true before I wait hours on the manuf. customer service line to see if they will fix? ExpSer briefly checked all other suspension componenets.

How do I set rent for my 900+ sqft, newly fixed-up 1 bed+ large office, garden apt, w/d, in center PS? Checking CL, I get from 1bed @ 2300 to 3bed at 2500.

I had hoped for 2150… what do you think?

Instulating Basement Walls


I thought I read somewhere that when you finish a basement with interior walls, you do NOT insulate behind the walls (the new walls would be abt a foot from the foundation walls).

Is this correct? Wouldn’t you need to insulate the back wall at least?

Water Heater Recs


Seems hard to wade thru water heater specs on the web. Apparently there are only 2 manufs? Could that be true? And that they’re mostly the same in reliability and performance?

I need a standard vent 50/60g hi-recovery. Any models people can recommend? I’m thinking State or AO Smith. Is Bradford-White (more expensive) better?
