Bleeding Radiators?


I’ve heard that after each heating season you should “bleed the radiators.” What exactly is this, how do you do it, and is this true ?

BOILER QUESTION


i have a brunham Independent boiler fairly new. it has an automatic direct water line that runs from a cold water line going in to my hot water heater. i was informed that the water level in the glass tube on the left side of the boiler should be half full, but mine is always full (pretty clean though). is this a problem? i drain a bucket of the dirty water weekly from the bottom spigot on the opposite side, but the water level stays the same. also, is it a problem that cold water enters the boiler instead of hot water ? does this lead to the sporadic clanging in the pipes i ofter hear ?

Steel Deck for $7,000 ?


Need back deck 6′ by 12′ entirely out of steel for fire code. Been quoted $7,000 for materials (deck, staircase, railing, etc), but not installation – what have other people paid ???

Custom Floor Stain Needed


looking for someone knowledgeable in creating a custom stain for our floors – we know what we want, just cant seem to come up with the mix ourselves. anyone have any recommendations of someone great who does either consultation or the work themselves ? we will be staining two different kinds of antique pine.

STAIRCASE CODE


I have 10″ treads with one baluster (spindle) per tread. does this pass code or do i need to put two balusters per tread ? Is there a staircase code in NYC ? any advice would be great. thanks.

NEEDED SHEETROCK/PLASTER CREW


walls are up, time for sheetrock and plaster. looking for good reliable crew to come blow out 4 floors, doing good job with taping and plaster. also considering doing the hanging myself with small crew and hiring someone to tape and plaster. anyone have any advice or high recommendations ? also, any ideas as to price per floor (building 20×40) ? thank you !

CORNICE CO$T$


I received a quote of $10,000 to make a fiberglass cornice replicating those in my neighborhood, and a $8,000 quote to put the thing up (4 story 20 foot wide building). sound reasonable ? has anyone ever had this done ?

BOILER ROOM EXHAUST


In a 2 family home, does the actual boiler room containing boiler, hot water heaters, and hvac equipment need to be vented outside ? the boiler and hot water heaters are currently vented through the chimney to the roof.
