In Search of Paylot in Sty Heights for 1st Time Visitor
Help! My family is staying in Sty Heights, Brooklyn for 3 days this weekend. We are unfamiliar with this neighborhood and am concerned about parking. We will be staying in the 200 block of Bainbridge Str Fri thru Monday the 18th. Can anyone provide some insight on the parking situation? Is street parking easy to find? If we have to walk from our car at night is it relatively safe? Can anyone recommend a good pay lot nearby? What is the schedule for the street cleaner? Thanks!
Where to Go/What to See in Stuyvesant Heights for 1st Time Visitor
Thanks to a forum poster I was able to secure a short term rental in the Stuyvesant Heights neighborhood for a mini-vacation. Since I would like to live like a local for my stay and tend to avoid the touristy spots I am seeking suggestions on family friendly places and activities to do while we are there. This will be our virgin visit to this neighborhood and we are excited about exploring everything Brooklyn has to offer. We will have a car and would appreciate comments and suggestions on the parking situation and/around Bainbridge Street where we are staying, as well as tips for using public transportation. If it helps we are not into the bar scene but love food of all kinds, enjoy visiting flea markets, and corky little stores that cater to the budget minded and has unusual merchandise. We will also have our 13 year old daughter in tow so the places we go would need to be appropriate for her also. Our visit is April 15-18 if there is any local events going on that you can recommend as well. Thanks in advance for all your help!
Suggestions for Lodging in Brooklyn
I plan to relocate to your wonderfull town in 4 years and want to experience true city living. I am making frequent trips to explore each neighborhood and am in need of help with lodging. Can anyone suggest a good motel/bed & breakfast/or daily rental furnished apt for our stay in April? I need something that can accomodate 2 adults and one child w/ or w/out a kitchen but with a private bath. We would be coming via car so parking or a pay lot nearby would be a plus. Thanks!!!!
Info on “Can Factory” Flea Market
While visiting Park Slope Brooklyn last winter a local suggested we go to a little indoor/organic flea market nearby. I don’t know the offical name but it is known as the “Can Factory”. I will be visiting again in about 2 weeks and wanted to visit here again. Does anyone know their official name or website so I can check their hours? Is there any other good flea markets (other then the Brooklyn Flea, know and love that place) that is worth visiting? Thanks!!!
RELOCATION & RENT CONTROL
I’m planning on moving from PA to Brooklyn in 4/5 years. In discussing my plans a few of you mentioned “rent control”. What is that and how do I go about obtaining it? Is it something you need to be on a waiting list for or must residency already be established? For those of you familiar with PA, is it something like our section 8?
From ‘burbs to Brooklyn Part II
Thanks everyone for your comments. Alot of you raised valid points that I didn’t even consider. I know money will be the biggest factor. One of the main reasons I want to move is because I love to renovate houses and love the style of brownstones. With that being said I have looked into the real estate prices for brownstone ownership and know that is not obtainable on my budget. But I would be happy just living in one of these beauties w/out actually owning it. Can anyone suggest another NY city that offers stately brownstones at more affordable prices where owning a car is not so much of an inconvenience?
To my credit I do have a 5 bedroom home here in PA with a lot of equity that I am hoping will finance my move.
I totally agree with exploring all the neighborhoods before I make my move. I have rented a garden apt in Park Slope on a few occasions on a daily basis and it was ideal. However I found it hard to find an arrangement like that in another neighborhood, can anyone suggest any daily/furnished rentals?
Thanks to all you Brooklynites (native or adoptee) for your help, I’m sure I’ll be asking more of you in the future.
Info on Relocating From ‘burbs to Brooklyn
I am looking to relocate to Brooklyn from conservative Lancaster Co, PA. I would prefer to do this after my daughter graduates in about 4 years. As a single person I know this will be financially difficult given the cost of living is so much higher and the lifestyle is different than living in the suburbs where I am now. I really need to plan well for this life changing move and needed advice from locals on how to proceed. I do not have a degree and would need to look for an entry-mid level clerical/accounting job and would like to know to the best sites/classifieds/places to find work. In addition I only have explored the Park Slope and Ft Greene neighborhoods but know they are more expensive than others. Can anyone give me any insight into the different neighborhoods, vibes, lifestyles, and cultures? As a newcomer is it better to keep my car or rely on public transportation? Is street parking readily available and safe? As you can tell I have a lot of questions on lifestyle changes. Any advice is appreciated.
